Carved items n Healing tools @Kota Lukut

These articles of interesting medicinal, religious and cultural values could be viewed, (and touched!) at the small but informative (and free!) Kota Lukut Museum. This museum is dedicated to house findings from excavation done at the nearby Kota Lukut (Fort of Lukut), which was once an independent, trading post (largely tin mined at the Lukut River) owned by Raja Bot. At its heyday, Kota Lukut had the best administration in the Archipelago, complete with a troop of cavalry policemen, that it earned praises from the then Governor of Malacca, William Farquhar, as a city that surpassed even Malacca in term of governance, wealth and prosperity.

Pointings n Beckonings

The importance  of body language is essential in the intricate complexity of Malay rich culture and  social interactions.  On this particular article, I would like to bring special attention to the methods use for pointing and beckoning  in the Malay world of ‘Santun’.

36 years ago, the Lost Begun…

A tribute to the maestro… Your songs will live forever. GETARAN JIWA, probably his greatest song performed here by Ismail Haron, a 1974 recording and for me personally one of the best interpretations of this beautiful song from the film ‘Antara Dua Darjat’.

All photos taken from the encyclopedic book of Malay films KACA PERMATA – Memoir Saorang Pengarah by JAMIL SULONG, also a maestro of Malay films.

Passed away on the 29th May 1973 at the age of 44, exactly 36 years ago
Al fatihah……Legacy beliau tetap kekal dan di sanjungi.

SSUS for a better understanding

The One School for All (SSUS) campaign has attracted a lot of publicity.

For more than 50 years, if there is ever a ‘universal unity’ acrossed the multiracial and multiracists Malaysia.  It would have been so.  WHY isn’t that so?????  Why cant we see through our skin colours and voice accents and unite as one Malaysia. ….the answer is…..as long as our oor  arrr emmm…. SOCCER TEAM has not revived to the old glory….there is no unity in Malaysia.

Malays: A Minority Community!!

Malays live island-wide and can very easily get along with the other communities to live in peace and harmony. The Malays are also noted for their spiritual abilities. In fact, the nature of the Malay psyche is peace, which is propounded by their religion, Islam.

On Being Malay…and becoming racist

I see how the people who make my drinks in Starbucks and Coffee Bean are almost always Malay and my heart still sinks. I see them reaching over the counters accepting cash or credit cards from the yuppies in fancy suits and I notice how they are almost never Malay.

Pan-Melayu Unity

People confuse race, ethnicity, and nationality. Race is based on shared genetics, lineage, physical description and geography. Ethnicity is based on culture and perceived similarities. Nationality is based on political status….Hokulani78

Malaysia, the pretender to the Malay throne?

An interesting piece about Malaysia’s attempt to be the champion of the Malay world, even though Malay is an ethnic grouping and not a race, except in Bolehland where its Constitution specifies what a Malay should be, including being a Muslim.

What if you are an Orang Melayu from Indonesia who’s a Christian?

Keris

Legend had it that the mystical keris Taming Sari could fly and seek out the enemy, just like modern missiles. Not only that but it would even rattle in its sheath to warn its owner of potential danger.

In the 15th. Century, when he wanted to ask for the hand in marriage of Majapahit princess Raden Galoh Chandra Kirana, Sultan Mansur Shah traveled to Java with his royal bodyguard, Hang Tuah. Read the rest of this entry »
